Listening ahead in the podcast Archive 81 is based on may provide some answers, but the source material and the show differ, so that may not be of much help. The wildcards will be Samuel and Iris, as we don’t know where they are or what they’re doing, though presumably they’re still servants of Kaelego, and attempt to please him. We have to assume that much of season 2 will focus on the role reversal here, with Melody now trying to get Dan out of the past. But what does he want? Are there more beings like him? That remains the biggest question heading into season 2. Kaelego seems like a cosmic being, not a satanic demon, so this doesn’t seem to be a story of heaven, hell or purgatory, but of alternate dimensions. A realm that mirrors our own world, and but with no real sense of time and space, with areas pulled from people’s minds, blending into one another. Unlike other summoned demons in other fiction, he does not seem interested in emerging from the Otherworld and occupying a vessel, but rather in snatching up people for his realm. What remains unclear through all of this is what Kaelego actually wants here. Dan, meanwhile, was not trapped in the Otherworld, but flung out back in the ‘90s after the apartment building burned down. Even though Samuel was supposed to emerge with her, we don’t see him or where he went. The show ends with Melody brought out into the present day and reunited with her witch mother. ![]() Melody seems lost in that world when she’s found there, but Dan is able to bring her out. ![]() ![]() Iris emerges decades later looking no worse for wear, really, though it’s unclear how much time has passed from her perspective. They just end up sort of trapped in that alternate reality. He doesn’t really seem to be…doing anything with them there. ![]()
